Chakra healing is a traditional form of energy work that uses the chakras as its main focal points and targets. The word “chakra” comes from Sanskrit and means: “wheel”. There are seven major chakras, but some traditions may use more or less than this number, depending on their own beliefs and opinions; however, these different positions do not affect the basic principles behind Chakra Healing.
These central power sources (or nodes) transform our emotional states through biochemical processes in our body’s endocrine system. The energies created by these centres help to generate all levels of consciousness. All of our sensory systems, organs and organ systems work together with the chakras to create physical health and well-being; we become ill when we experience imbalances in the chakras. When all of our chakras are balanced, we create a sense of harmony and unity between ourselves and the outside world. Since every part of our body is interrelated and interconnected with one another (for example: if you injure your arm, then your brain’s motor cortex will be activated to compensate for that injury), then it makes sense that there should also be a form of connection between each individual chakra.
The seven major chakras:
• Root/Muladhara Chakra – located at the base of the spine
• Sacral/Swadhisthana Chakra – located about two inches below the navel
• Solar Plexus/Manipura Chakra – located between the ribcage and above the navel
• Heart/Anahata Chakra – located at the centre of the chest
• Throat/Vishuddha Chakra – located at the centre of the throat
• Third Eye/Ajna Chakra – Located in between your eyebrows (third-eye region)
• Crown/Sahasrara Chakra – Located at the top of the head
Here is a brief summary of each chakra’s characteristics, attributions and functions –
1. The Root Chakra (red) is located at the base of the spine, in between the legs. It is associated with the action of excretion. This source generates instinctive behaviours such as mating, fighting or fleeing from danger. It also governs our most primitive desires involving food, shelter and clothing. When this chakra is out of balance due to fatigue, anxiety or nervousness then there may be an impairment that prevents us from properly evaluating risk versus reward scenarios appropriately; for example, we might do something dangerous without knowing what we’re getting into because there was no fear coming from our Root Centre. An imbalance in root chakra also impacts our money flows and material possessions.
2. The Sacral Chakra (orange) is located about two inches below the navel. It is associated with the spleen and reproductive organs. This centre governs our creative potential. When imbalanced due to depression, lethargy, fear or anger then we either censor ourselves too much emotionally (repression) or completely lose control over emotional impulses that could otherwise be channeled into more creative ways of expression. An imbalance in this chakra impacts our relationships as well.
3. The Solar Plexus Chakra (yellow) is located in the centre of the body just below the diaphragm and above the navel. It is associated with the stomach region and controls how well we can adapt to changing conditions around us. When unbalanced due to anxiety, guilt, shame or insecurity then one of two things may occur: either we become overly controlling of our environment, or, we experience powerlessness due to the influence of outside world.
4. The Heart Chakra (green) is located in the centre of the chest area, right between the lungs; it’s associated with the heart and thymus gland. This chakra is related to unconditional love for oneself and others around us. When this source is not in balance due to depression, anger or impatience then one might find themselves closed off emotionally from connecting with other people on a deeper level. Imbalance in this chakra also leads to overextending and burnouts as the giving and receiving often gets distorted.
5. The Throat Chakra (blue) is located at the centre of the throat. It is associated with speech and listening skills while also being ruled by the thyroid gland that helps regulate metabolism among other things. When this centre is imbalanced due to rage, grief or guilt then one might become overly shy or introverted with excessive self-criticism. An imbalance in this chakra also cause expression issues and misunderstanding in communication and relationships.
6. The Third Eye Chakra (indigo) is located in between the eyebrows. It is associated with the intuitive ability and governs our ability to focus, absorb and process information coming from the outside world. If this chakra becomes imbalanced by feelings of depression, fear or obsession then one might experience memory loss, emotional swings or even mental illness.
7. The Crown Chakra (violet) is located at the very top of the head, right underneath where you would find a soft spot if someone pressed there hard enough; it’s associated with the pituitary gland which helps regulate our sense of balance between sleep/wake states. A blocked centre due to grief, fear or depression can lead to feelings of separation from the rest of the world.
These seven major chakras in the human body are energetically connected with specific organs and glands throughout our physiology. These seven chakras aren’t situated within localised regions but, they tend to span across different areas depending on the associated glands and organs where they are located.
As we practice the art and science of chakra healing, we learn to move through each individual chakra. This process stimulates an increase in our higher brain functions and opens up new channels for psychological development and spiritual growth that affect not only ourselves but also those around us. As energy flows freely within our body’s connective tissue (or meridians), it makes sense that there should be a natural flow of energy between these centres; this is what Chakra Healing aims to accomplish.
Chakra balancing can be done through various methods such as meditation, mudras, mantras, affirmations, yoga, food, water & light therapy and energy healing.
